Body Mass Index
What is it and how is it used?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height. Calculate your BMI. BMI is a reliable indicator of body fatness for people. BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI correlates to direct measures of body fat, such as underwater weighing and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).1, 2 BMI can be considered an alternative for direct measures of body fat. Additionally, BMI is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
Choosing A Doctor
Things to look for
It is important to choose your doctor with care, because quality varies. For example, the Pacific Business Group on Health asked patients of California doctors' groups how they rated their care. The results? More than 80 percent of the patients said they were satisfied with their care. But fewer than two-thirds were happy with the ease of getting that care. Choose a primary care doctor who will meet your needs and give you quality care.
Healing vs. Curing
What's the Difference?
In our world of greater awareness, and as people are turning more and more to natural ways of taking care of themselves, the words healing and curing tend to be used quite often and interchangeably. In reality, they mean two different things!
When people perceive themselves to be sick, or actually suffering from one or more discomforts, the first reaction is to take something or do something to put an end to the suffering. It may be an aspirin, something stronger, or a therapy of some kind. If one is successful at it, and the suffering ends, they may say that they are healed or cured.
But healing has little to do with the removal or ending of symptoms. Rather, it is an intimate and integrative process that encompasses the entire spectrum of our existence.
Choosing And Using A Health Plan
Changes and Choices
Health care in America is changing rapidly. Twenty-five years ago, most people in the United States had indemnity insurance coverage. A person with indemnity insurance could go to any doctor, hospital, or other provider (which would bill for each service given), and the insurance and the patient would each pay part of the bill.
But today, more than half of all Americans who have health insurance are enrolled in some kind of managed care plan, an organized way of both providing services and paying for them. Different types of managed care plans work differently and include preferred provider organizations (PPOs), health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and point-of-service (POS) plans.
Your Guide to Choosing Quality Health Care
Choosing a Hospital
How can you choose the best quality hospital for the care you need? It is important to consider quality, because research shows that some hospitals simply do a better job than others. For example, we know that hospitals that do a greater number of the same surgeries have better outcomes for their patients.
